Israel Epstein

(1915-2005)

Israel Epstein was a renowned journalist and author. Born in Warsaw, Poland, he became a Chinese citizen in 1957 and a member of the CPC in 1964. He made great efforts to cover the heroic fight of the CPC and the people of China to the world during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Epstein helped to launch the magazine China Reconstructs (now China Today) upon an invitation from Soong Ching Ling in 1951, and was the magazine's editor-in-chief until his retirement. He was elected as a member of the seventh National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a member of the Standing Committees of the sixth, eighth, ninth and 10th CPPCC National Committees. He served as vice chairman of the China Welfare Institute and vice chairman of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation. His major works include "The People's War," "I Visit Yenan," and "Woman in World History: Soong Ching Ling."

Sidney Shapiro

(1915-2014)

Sidney Shapiro was a noted translator who was born in the U.S. and became a Chinese citizen in 1963. He began working for the Foreign Languages Press in 1953 and then for China Pictorial. He worked to translate Chinese literature to English, and was best known for his highly regarded English version of "Outlaws of the Marsh." He was a member of the sixth to 12th National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a member of the Chinese Writers Association, and a council member of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Translation award, the Special Book Award of China, and the Lifetime Achievement Award for You Bring Charm to the World.

Yang Xianyi

(1915-2009)

Yang Xianyi was a well-known translator who started working for the Foreign Languages Press in 1952. Together with his wife, Gladys Yang, he translated more than 100 Chinese classics including "A Dream of Red Mansions," "The Scholars," and selected works of Lu Xun, which became widely known both in and outside China. He made great contributions to translation in China and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Translation award.

Duan Liancheng

(1926-1998)

Duan Liancheng successively served as the editorial board chair of People's China, head of the editorial department and English department of Beijing Review, vice president and president of China International Publishing Group (renamed China International Communications Group in 2021), vice president of the Translators Association of China, a council member of the International Cultural Exchange Association, and an executive member of the council of the China International Culture Association. He was a translator for the Chinese delegation to the Korean War armistice talks. His theoretical work "How to Help Foreigners Know China" is considered a masterpiece of China's international communication efforts.

Ruth F. Weiss

(1908-2006)

Born in Austria and naturalized as a Chinese citizen in 1955, Ruth F. Weiss worked as a German language expert for the Bureau of International Press of the General Administration of Press of the Central People's Government (the predecessor of CICG) and then China Pictorial from 1951. She was elected as a member of the sixth and seventh National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. She devoted herself to China's international communication efforts, making great contributions to China's development and progress and the mutual understanding and friendship between China and other countries.

Denise Ly-Lebreton

(1909-2005)

Born in France, Denise Ly-Lebreton came to China in 1953 and worked at the French Department of the Foreign Languages Press until her death. She helped to edit the French editions of the writings of Chinese leaders including Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, and Deng Xiaoping.

Ye Junjian

(1914-1999)

Ye Junjian was a celebrated translator and author. He helped to launch the English-language magazine Chinese Literature in 1949 and served as its deputy editor. He was also an executive member of the Universal Esperanto Association, honorary president of the All-China Esperanto League, and chief editor of Chinese Translators Journal. He made great contributions to children's literature in China. He was the first person to translate the original Danish version of "Hans Chistian Anderson's Fairy Tales" directly into Chinese, which was praised by sinologists in Denmark as more suitable than the original version for contemporary reading.

Gladys Yang

(1919-1999)

Gladys Yang was a translator who devoted her life to cultural exchange between China and other countries. She took up residence in China in the 1940s and worked as an English translator at the Foreign Languages Press and the Chinese Literature magazine successively. Working with her husband, Yang Xianyi, she completed translations of a number of Chinese classics such as "A Dream of Red Mansions," "Selected Elegies of the State of Chu," and "The Scholars."

Shen Suru

(1919-2009)

Shen Suru was a renowned translator and one of the founders of China's international communication theory. He served as deputy editor-in-chief of China Reconstructs and an honorary council member of the Translators Association of China. His works such as "Access to Perfection in Translation: Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance" contributed to the development of foreign communication theory and translation studies in China.

Zhang Yan

(1922-2018)

Zhang Yan successively served as editor of the Hong Kong-based English half-monthly China Digest, deputy editor-in-chief of People's China, the first U.S.-based correspondent for People's Daily and the first deputy editor-in-chief of China Reconstructs. A lifelong cultural ambassador, he was noted for his first-hand reports on the Japanese surrender ceremony in China in 1945 and the PRC Founding Ceremony in 1949.

Tang Sheng

(1922-2016)

Tang Sheng was a famed translator and a pioneer of simultaneous interpretation in China. She worked as an interpreter for CPC leaders at major international conferences and served as a consultant to the State Council of China, a simultaneous interpreter at the U.N. Headquarters and deputy editor-in-chief of Chinese Literature Press. She was presented with the Lifetime Achievement in Translation award for her contributions to the translation of such Chinese literary works as "Nights of Spring Fever".

Lin Wusun

(1928-2021)

An eminent translator, Lin Wusun served as a council member of the International Federation of Translators, president of China International Publishing Group (renamed China International Communications Group in 2021), executive vice president of the Translators Association of China and chief editor of Chinese Translators Journal. His major translation works include "Sunzi: The Art of War" and "The Analects of Confucius." He was granted the Lifetime Achievement in Translation award.

Ru Suichu

(1932-2025)

A noted photographer, Ru Suichu served as an editorial board member and a senior reporter for China Pictorial. He was one of the first Chinese photojournalists to visit the river source areas on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. He won two gold awards at international photography exhibitions in 1959 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Golden Statue Award for China Photography.

Paul J. White

(1943-2021)

Paul J. White began working as an English editor at Foreign Languages Press in 1996. He participated in polishing major translation works including "Xi Jinping: The Governance of China" and "Compendium of Materia Medica." He also received both the Chinese Government Friendship Award and the Special Book Award of China.

Huang Youyi

(1953-)

Huang Youyi is a renowned translator who served as a member of the 11th and 12th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committees, vice president and editor-in-chief of China International Publishing Group (renamed China International Communications Group in 2021), vice president of the International Federation of Translators, executive vice president of the Translators Association of China, member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and vice president of the China Academy of Translation. He has participated in the translation of government documents and CPC leaders' speeches, and served as executive editor for the English version of "Xi Jinping: The Governance of China." His major translation works include "The Bonfire of the Vanities" and "Selections from Strange Tales from the Liaozhai Studio."

David Ferguson

(1956-)

David Ferguson has worked as an English editor and author at Foreign Languages Press since 2010. He served as the language consultant for the English versions of "Xi Jinping: The Governance of China," "Xi Jinping: Belt and Road" and "Zhejiang, China: A New Vision for Development." He has also received both the Chinese Government Friendship Award and the Special Book Award of China.
